Mientras observaba las diferentes reacciones de los políticos de Nueva Jersey y los demócratas del Senado ante la acusación del senador Menéndez, me llamó la atención otra yuxtaposición: las diferentes reacciones de los demócratas del Senado ante el senador Menéndez y el ex senador Franken.

Nunca me ha preocupado especialmente la presión ejercida sobre el senador Franken para que renuncie (y creo que la senadora Gillibrand ha recibido cierta culpa por su papel en el proceso, lo que puede haber afectado a su campaña presidencial en 2020, que es poco probable que haya tenido éxito en primer lugar). Pero no puedo evitar preguntarme si los demócratas no han creado una situación en la que el juicio político sea lo que ayude al senador a mantener su asiento al menos en el corto plazo, porque los colegas apuntarán al debido proceso y a la presunción de inocencia, etc. – mientras que las acusaciones no penales de irregularidades son de algún modo más graves porque «deberían» ser tratadas por el Senado.
